It was a long walk of 11 miles, with 340 metres of ascent. Conditions were very dry and dusty. There were good views of the beautiful landscape in all directions. We could see the Eildon Hills at Melrose. We walked along part of Dere Street and passed the remains of a Roman signal station and a couple of forts (a bit underwhelming). We found a nice lunch spot with a cool breeze. Navigation was challenging, with several stops and long discussions to decide the desired route. Ken’s satnav “pinged” when we were on the right track. We saw a nice family at the ford with the children playing in the water – making memories. There were no adders and Ruby wasn't with us this time. Wildlife: Skylarks, meadow pipit, buzzards, sticklebacks, alpacas, very young calves |
