Comments

It was Julie’s first Farts walk since her hip replacement – and the hardest walk for her in over two years.

It was a moorland walk where the heather, in places, completely obliterated the ‘path’. Everyone suffered exfoliated lower limbs!

We opted not to have lunch at Blawearie, but rather to press on to a (purportedly) ‘Posh Cowshed’. Blawearie (‘tired of the wind’) was a must-visit place for a bunch of Farts. The views of Cheviot and Hedgehope Hills were fabulous from Blawearie. And the Posh Cowshed did indeed exist, and was certainly most posh!

Cateran Hole was found, and is a really fascinating thing. From the 26 degree C air we descended into the earth to a cool subterranean world. The cave extends for around 100ft. Whoever cut the steps (and when) is a mystery, as is the why - the good money is on smugglers to hide their contraband. There is a lot of graffiti to be found in the cave - could 'W R 1765' be one of the smugglers, or even the person who made the steps??

As we left Cateran Hole, Sandy jokingly commented to another visitor to the hole that, should he find any treasure she (Sandy) had first dibs on it. As we walked away from the hole we heard a shout from the other person. He was waving a pair of sunglasses - Sandy’s sunglasses!

The farmers were making hay while the sun shone with seriously big boy toys.

Wildlife: Lots of cows, a pair of dragonflies mating on the wing, and very few people. The sheep had not been shorn and were trying to shelter in the shadows of the trees. A lot of grouse on the moorland.

Meal

The Tankerville Arms at Eglingham. Enjoyed by all – the Neck Oil IPA was most welcome. Scampi was the most popular choice, along with the chicken with peppercorn sauce - delicious.
