Flat and bumpy. Lots of waist-high grass - overgrown. Passed the duck pond (fed the ducks), golf course and an ornate stone house. GB bitten twice by cleggs. Had to walk along a busy road for half a mile. Passed a field of flax. Met George G. at the stepping stones. He had an encounter with some very friendly cows. Met Evelyn at Kirkley Hall for lunch in the walled garden, after which Ron and a rabbit gave each other a fright (it jumped out of the lavender bush he was smelling). Saw people playing tennis on a grass court. Carol went back with GG to Ponteland by car after looking round the garden. There was an unusual pine tree in the grounds with blue cones and a red-flowered creeper intertwined. Fed the horses with mints and apple cores beside the obelisk. The four remaining walkers had a scary encounter with a herd of frisky bullocks (about 20), one of which broke a fence trying to get away. They guarded the stile from us. Saw a water pump that didn't work. Didn't meet anyone else on the walk. Lots of nettles round most of the stiles. Wildlife: Toad, catterpillar (green, white and orange), bluetits, skylarks, pheasants, swallows, house martins, coots, morganser, big rams. WELL DONE, BETH! |
