First walk to start from the leader's home. Also, first walk in sight of Newcastle. Flattest walk of the year. Walked past eight pubs and a tea-room. A number of points gained trying to keep Ashley a happy bunny. First walk to take in a duck race (500 ducks with numbers on their behinds) - arrived just in time for the start. None of our group won anything. Beth lost a glove - Sandy gasped. Lots of people, and a lots of dogs including two Dalmatians and a lot of bull terriers. The longest ever one and a half miles to Newburn. At Newburn in 1771 there was a high flood, 35ft. above the normal river level. Lots of forced marching - we did Newburn to Wylam in one and a quarter hours, which was knackering. There was a mysterious arrival of a golf ball, and according to Ashley, lots of useless golfers. Passed George Stephenson's cottage, where we crossed an old girder. There were holiday homes in Whittledean, and unusual sculptures west of Hagg Bank. Lots of newborn calves. First sighting of an MP on a walk, who was bandy-legged and jogging whilst wearing a bandage. Wildlife: Stoat, fox, rabbit, cormorant, heron, 500 yellow ducks, proper ducks, moorhens. |
