Comments

Parking at the Golf club was a little restricted but luckily some cars left not long after our arrival so we all managed to park near the beach. The walk was spilt into two halves, with Michael and Ashley walking the loop from Embleton, along the Embleton Links to Newton and back to Embleton.

Walking up to Newton we stopped at a bird hide beside a large pond (Newton Pool Nature Reserve) with a lot of varied bird life and lots of large bullrushes.

We stopped for lunch on the wrong hill, but the views were good. After lunch we found the right hill - Kelsoe Hill -  where there is a small metal cross. After lunch we walked across the fields back to Embleton, not an easy route as the local landowner appeared to have made alterations to the rights of way which deviated from the original signposts. These were still visible if you looked for them. We managed to walk up the wrong side of a fence line, which caused some tricky negotiating to get out of.

We reached Embleton and had some much-needed ice cream refreshment, welcome as the temperature was warming up. Michael and Ashley returned to the cars and had further refreshments at the Golf club.

The rest of the walkers continued to Dunstan Steads and across the Heughs to Dunstanburgh castle.

Wildlife:

At the nature reserve - Heron, Mallards, Coots, Moorhen, lots of Greylag Geese. As we walked away a large flock of Canada geese flew down to the adjoining fields.

Along the coast - Heron, Redshank, Sandpipers, Pied Wagtails, Oystercatchers, Curlews (heard but not seen). Hare crossing the golf course. Eider Ducks

Meal

The White Swan, Dinnington - Sandy, Ron, George and Evelyn.
