A pleasant walk through flat and picturesque countryside. We had a chat with the bailiff, who was hunting a cormorant that was taking fish from the reservoir. Our lunch stop was in the grounds of the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey – good seating was provided. We wandered though the grounds before proceeding along the riverside to Cover Bridge at the confluence of the rivers Cover and Ure. We stopped for a drink in the beer garden of the Coverdale Inn – there was a roasting hot fire in the lounge. We passed Danby Hall and St Oswald’s Church (which pre-dates the Norman Conquest) and stopped to talk to a friendly pony. Then we walked along a corridor of oak trees and saw several pom-pom trees. There were lots of nice houses along the route. Wildlife: Young swan, buzzard, egret, goosanders, noisy mallards and probably heard a curlew and some skylarks. |
