Before we started Ashely asked if we were going to get a pie - confusion all round until we realised he meant 'up high'. Lovely autumnal colours from the trees, and the leaves on the ground. Long straight avenues of trees. Part of John Buchan Way. One Iron Age settlement and two Iron Age forts, with a chevaux de frise. Lunch at second fort. Sheepdog trials and a Hill Race at Kirkton. Pink fortified tower at Barns. Nice country house by the Tweed. Impressive castle with good views. A dog swimming in the river refused to retrieve its log. Several mushrooms. Wildlife: Huge bull and a lot of small calves. |
Some returned to Newcastle to watch the rugby World Cup. George, Evelyn, Lance and Julie stayed in Peebles to have a meal at the Tontine Hotel. Lovely haggis, needless to say. |
