Route

It should have been Holwick to High Force and back via the moors. It was: Holwick to High Force and straight back (the High Force Retreat).

Weather

Started damp and got wetter.

Apologies and Excuses

Bernie - schoolwork

Carol - decorating

Evelyn - Christmas shopping with mum

George B - at Scottish Fiddle Orchestra in Scotland with mum

Girls - at parties

Comments

The walk leaders had no waterproof trousers - their excuse was that it wasn't supposed to rain. Lots of water in the river - very impressive waterfalls. Beautiful rainbows en route. Evidence that the Germans invaded - lots of 'Achtung' signs. Saw lots of drumlins (glacial deposits) and some stone carved sheep.

Crossed the bridge without being 'precipitaed on to the rocks' (like nine harvesters had been in the 18th Century). Lots of wet people. Youngsters in jeans and bomber jackets. After lunch at High Force the walk was redirected to the pub, the Strathmore Arms. It never stopped raining after that. Ashley especially ordered a coffee to get a chocolate because he didn't realise that he would get one with the tea. Good beer.

Wildlife: Lots and lots of mallards. Slow pheasants, one rabbit, buzzard, coal tit.

Evening meal

Ravensworth Arms, Lamesley. Joined by Evelyn and Carol.
