Romaldskirk was a very attractive village with a nice church. Pleasant lunch spot on the village green. Unusual cast iron parish markers. Very long breeze block wall. Muddy paths. Abundance of wild garlic, campions, primroses, dandelions, forget-me-nots and wood anemones. Steep gorge and a fast-flowing river. Narrow stone bridge. Saw four canoeists and a frog that swam across a wide, fast-flowing stretch of the River Tees. Climbed up to Egglestone where the men went to the Three Tuns Inn while Sandy and Carol went to Egglestone Hall for tea (slow service). They met a couple from Knitsley. Passed a ghost encampment and water outlet from Kielder into the Tees. Steep climb up giant steps, funded by the Rambers Association. Lots of bluebells. Good views, steep descent through the gorse, where there was a strong smell of coconut. Had afternoon tea break beside a bridge watching a middle-aged canoeist slaloming as fast as he could. Two lads somersaulted backwards off the bridge into the river - one belly-flopped! Wildlife: Lots of sheep and lambs. Very feathery cockerel. Two metallic blue ducks. Swimming frog. |
