Saltburn (Cat Nab car park) - Brotton - Kitten Lane - Skinningrove - Guibal - Fan House - Cleveland Way - Saltburn. Overcast but dry, cold breeze off the sea, milder out of the wind. Better than forecast. Ashley, George B, Bernie, Ron and Sandy. |

Very clarty beginning. Overdressed for the village and for the cemetery. Locals had not heard of poop-scoops. Found the cut opposite no. 42 (is this the ultimate question?). Had lunch on playing fields where N had moved through 90 degrees. Nice harbour just below Skinningrove. Wondered where Bob (spaniel) had got to - possible sighting in Saltburn. Interesting industrial archaeology - Fan House - busy train line with tight bends. We have never seen so much potash. Afternoon tea by metal sculptured wind chime - consisted of pulley wheel and starfish, cat, jellyfish, horse, torch, dove, mermaid, mermaid's purse, ring, and hammer. Recharged Bernie's torch. Went to cafe for second afternoon tea - carrot cake on a huge plate. Ron got a scalding from Sandy (not a scolding). Solid butter. No loos. Bernie tried to follow a strange man (Ashley) into the gents while too engrossed in PC toilet. Walked along the pier. Paced it as: Ashley - 230 metres (60-62 double paces = 100 metres). George: 280 paces. No ships at the end of the pier. Wildlife: Pied wagtail, robin, crows, heard lots of the birds in the dene, wren, meadow pipit, gulls. Did not see linnets, kestrels, whitethroats or Bob. Saw a crow impersonating a cormorant. |
Bowes Incline Hotel. Very nice meal. Found the right pub by heading for the wrong pub. |
