Visited Brunton Tower Milecastle (soggy). Then on to the Roman Bridge opposite Chesters Fort via "concentration camp" walkway. The water was frozen. Interesting gate at Chollerford. Lots of molehills, and a sheep trapped in a feeder. Reflections of the bridge and the George Hotel in the river. Lunch on an old stile beside the river. Evelyn left here and returned to the car at Chollerford. Muddy climb up. Scraggy sheep and limping goats. Took a wrong turn at a disused quarry and became disorientated. Eventually found the church, with an interesting historical exhibition inside. Sat on seats outside and admired the view. Saw Oswald's Cross, memorial for the Battle of Heavenfield 635AD. Walked along Hadrian's Wall way to Planetrees and saw where the wall width changes from 2 meters to 3 meters. Passed an alpaca herd. Three were friendly and two were very friendly. Walked along a paved Military Road past Written Crag. Lots of stone stiles. Muddy, slippy descent to Wall. Saw a large shooting party, and a Ford Zephyr. It was pouring with rain when we got back to the car. Wildlife: Two herons. A robin watched us eating. Evelyn saw a male peacock in full regalia flying across the road at Wall. |
