Comments

Difficult to find the start of the walk - the signpost was hidden in a hedge. Found it after asking directions from a friendly local. Disturbed a pair of buzzards. Passed the sites of several Roman turrets without seeing any evidence of them, but the ditches were prominent. There were lots of aircraft - autogyros and four late mark Spitfires (with D-day markings) in formation. There was a steep weir with an odd sock at the top. Had lunch just past the weir, beside a dead tree trunk.

Newton had immaculate gardens and friendly locals - went through someone's garden, where there was a very fertile vegetable plot. Friendly dogs and grumpy cat. Sandy fed Polo mints to horses, and nearly got mugged for her trouble. Ron was also chased. Saw a big white rabbit in a hutch.

We walked through a field of explosive cows, where one was cooling itself in a muddy pool. Met a 'fast walker' heading for the Once Brewed. Also had a chat with the retired vicar of Irthington who now lives in Walton. Bought a couple of ginger beers out of the Honesty Bar at the Centurion Inn in Walton. We found a stretch of re-buried Roman wall at Dovecote Bridge. Later saw two flower pot men.

Lots of activity in the fields. The hay had been harvested and wrapped in black plastic. Sandy cut her knee on wrought iron leaves on top of a wall where we had our afternoon snack. When we arrived back in Irthington, she had a long conversation with a lovely old lady whose husband had recently died.

Wildlife: Lots of buzzards, rabbits, wagtails, moths, miniature butterflies, swifts, swallows, pheasant, horses, miniature horses at Irthington.
