It was a walk with classic extensive and beautiful Lakeland views. From the lunch spot overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake we could see two lakes, the Solway Firth, the Irish Sea and Scotland. Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grizedale, Hopefield, Eskpike and Langdale Pikes were also identified. Bassenthwaite Lake was very quiet. We covered four tops in one walk. It was muddy in patches, and we met one couple twice. Our lunch spot was perfect, short of some alcohol. There were several other people there with friendly dogs. We met the Newton Aycliffe Ramblers going the other way and had a friendly chat with them. The route was busy with cyclists lower down. We had a steep descent from Broomfell to Aiken Beck. Ron fell into a gorse bush - getting to the two tricky crossings across the stream and then to the forestry track needed careful navigation. The final descent to the road was along a forestry track. There were heated toilets at Whinlatter Visitor Centre but the car parking was expensive. Wildlife / Flora / Fauna Robins, rooks, ravens, crows, lots of UBBs (unidentified black birds) and tweeting in the trees. Lots of berries on rowan trees. Three sheep and a frog. |
