The Car Park was packed with a group of about 15 people setting off on the same route just ahead of us. We never saw them again. This was a new route for the group, with beautiful views. The terrain varied. We walked through mixed woods with firs in the minority, open racks, and several short, sharp uphills. We passed crags, tall ferns and lots of purple heather. It was very dry underfoot. Blueberries eaten en route were described as very sweet. Several walkers are still wondering if their compasses are reliable. The total distance is in dispute as Ron’s app and some legs suggested further but the leader’s official distance was verified by Google Earth, Mapmywalk, Lance’s software and a 16-mile bike ride! Wildlife / Flora / Fauna Animals and Birds: Robin, skylarks, wood pigeon, black beetles, UBB(sic), dragonfly, buzzards heard but not seen. Black, shiny horses and riders (it was the horses that were black and shiny). Dogs, including old English sheepdogs and a Dalmatian. Flora:The flower Prunella vulgaris (common selfheal) was identified later by Ashley. |

Border Minstrel, Gosforth Park – a terrible experience. We waited 75 minutes before being served, due to there being two chefs short. The food was of mixed quality, the fish very big, the quiche very small and overcooked. We will not be returning.
