Comments

The walk was extremely muddy, and navigation was difficult in parts. We were never lost but we were not always in the right path.

There was an impressive waterfall at Wharnley Burn. We had a tricky scramble over the rocks at the side of the river, followed by a climb up a wet slippy bank to get out of the woods.

Our lunch spot was windy. Richard and Diane hunkered down behind a wall, where they were accosted by two very attractive black horses, one of which attempted to nibble Diane’s hair.

Wildlife etc:

Herd of alpacas in a field just outside Castleside; two black swans; at least three buzzards; lapwings, dippers, grey wagtail and we heard a curlew; sheep with lambs; snowdrops.

Meal

Manor House Inn, Carterway Heads – good pub food with very friendly service
