Comments

We had a look inside the church before starting – it was very plain. There was an information board outside about two shepherds lost in the snow in 1962. Beside the church was a large vicarage, now a private house, which resembled a peel tower. In the grounds was a circular folly.

Navigating the route required a lot of attention by Bernie, who was using her new app to help. It was a long slow climb up into the wind from the start. We passed Nellie Heron’s stone. At lunchtime we found a nice sheltered spot beside a small wood. We were able to sit on a long rectangular piece of wood (probably a gatepost). We took several group photos beside one of the many new gates en route which were all easy to open. There was one badly bashed metal gate. We couldn't decide how it had been damaged. Several marker posts were down, mainly due to rotten wood. We traversed a “restricted path” marked by purple arrows on a circular white disc.

It was very windy at the highest point of the walk. It was difficult to keep one’s balance even with the wind at one’s back.

We had our second break sitting with our feet hanging over the side of a wooden bridge, just below a bend in the burn and a shallow waterfall. There were some manic dogs (labradors) at one smallholding. We encountered two friendly Jack Russells as we returned to the car.

Very little wildlife was to be seen, apart from a couple of larks, a robin, a curlew, a wren, several pheasants, lots of lambs and two bulls.

Meal

Ridley Arms, Stannington – nice meal. Joined by Sandy and Evelyn.
