This was the biggest turnout for several years, including a guest appearance by Ashley. We were joined by Ken’s friend Alex. The river was turbulent under Wylam Bridge, but flat calm at Newburn as high tide approached. There was very little mud on the paths. Ken spotted some fish jumping, which he identified as kelt (salmon returning to the sea). We visited Clara Vale, a former mining village, for the first time. We exchanged life stories with some of the locals. There was a sign outside a house that said “No Parking – 24-hour Wheelbarrow Access required”. There were three rowing clubs at Newburn and a pub with a 1771 flood marker. Our lunch spot was just upstream from here. We required separate tables. We were interrupted by a canine altercation. The golf courses were deserted. Wildlife: Six herons, four buzzards, several cormorants, moorhens. |
